For the non-journalists out there, “SPJ” is the Society of Professional Journalists. When I was in college, I helped start the UNLV chapter of the student arm of SPJ. That probably does not come as a terrible shock to anyone.

So, I’m getting this sense of a newsroom as being “the editor has a list of events that may or may not be newsworthy, and assigns his journalists to cover them”. How might the editor acquire this list?
